Event-by-Event Recaps

800m - Saturday, August 13 @ 6:50pm PDT (Heat 2)

In the last event of the grueling Heptathlon competition, Nwaba would line up for the 800m in heat 2 of 3. As one of the better half milers in the field she would win her heat in 2:11.61 (941pts) just out distancing Hungary's Gyorgyi Zsivoczky-Farkas who ran 2:11.76 (939pts). Nwaba's mark was the 7th fastest of the evening.

Entering the competition as the 12th ranked Heptathlete by personal best score, her 800m time would move her up to 12th position in the Heptathlon at her first Olympic Games. Nwaba also finished as the top American. Americans Kendall Williams and Heather Miller-Koch would finish 17th (6221pts) and 18th (6213pts) respectively.

In the race for the Olympic podium, Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam would cross the line in the 800m just fast enough in 2:16.54 (871pts) to win gold over reigning Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill who ran 2:09.07 (978pts). They would score 6810pts and 6775pts respectively.

Brianne Theisen-Eaton, who trains in Santa Barbara part-time, had a great second day as she moved her way up to the Bronze medal position after the first two events. In the 800m she would run 2:09.50 (972pts) to capture her first Olympic medal in the Heptathlon with 6653pts.

The Men's Decathlon will get underway on Wednesday, August 17 with the 100m dash at 5:30am PDT. American Ashton Eaton who also trains in Santa Barbara part-time will be seeking to defend his Olympic gold medal from 2012. Eaton is the world record holder in the Decathlon with a score of 9,039pts.

Javelin - Saturday, August 13 @ 5:18pm PDT (Group B)

On her first attempt, Nwaba let fly the Jav out to 46.85m / 153'8 (799pts), which allowed her to move up two positions to 14th overall in the Heptathlon with 5368pts. 171pts separates her from a top 10 finish with one of her best events remaining, the 800m. Each second is 15pts in the Heptathlon and she is certainly capable of putting 8-12 seconds on particular Heptathletes.

At the top of the leader board, Thiam continued to lead reigning Olympic champion Ennis-Hill with 5939pts to 5797pts. Theisen-Eaton also threw near her personal best in the Javelin with a toss of 47.37m / 155'4 (809pts) to move into bronze medal position with 5681pts.

Long Jump - Saturday, August 13 @ 7:45am PDT

Another nerve rattling start to her morning, Nwaba would scratch her first two jumps in the Long Jump competition. However, it has been a position she has been before and on her third jump she leaped out to 5.81m / 19'0.75 (792pts), just slightly below her mark in Eugene earlier this year. Her overall total of 4569pts would drop her to 16th place with two events to go.

In the overall standings, Thiam moved into the lead with 5018pts over Ennis-Hills's 5013pts. Theisen-Eaton moved up one spot into 5th place overall (4872pts) with a good jump of 6.48m / 21'3.25 (1001pts).

200m Dash - Friday, August 12 @ 6:05pm PDT

To conclude day 1 of the Olympic Heptathlon competition, Nwaba would run a 24.77 (908pts) and finish the four events with 3777pts. While she would move back out of the top 10 and conclude day one in 11th place overall, Nwaba finds herself only 159pts out of the top 5. Reigning Olympic gold medalist leads the two-day, seven-event competition with 4057pts and Canada's Theisen-Eaton is in sixth place with 3871pts.

Shot Put - Friday, August 12 @ 4:35pm PDT

Competing in the A ring of the women's Heptathlon Shot Put, Nwaba would unleash an outdoor personal record of 14.81m / 48'7.25 (848pts) to win her group and finish third overall in the event. Traditionally not an event where she moves up in the rankings, her throw would move her into the Top 10, into ninth place overall with 2869pts and close the gap from the Top 5 to less than 50pts.

Thiam would maintain her lead in the Heptathlon with 3107pts over Ennis-Hill's 3027pts. Theisen-Eaton through three events found herself in fifth place overall with 2908pts.

High Jump - Friday, August 12 @ 6:50am PDT

In the second event of the day Nwaba pushed through the early heights, eventually clearing 1.83m / 6'0 (1016pts). Her height clearance of 6'0 is a go-to height and matched or bested her seasonal records from 2014 and 2015. 11 jumpers in the field cleared 6'0 and Nwaba's score moved her up 10 spots to 12th place overall with 2021pts.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson (GBR) and Thiam both cleared 1.98m / 6'6 (1211pts) setting World and Olympic Heptathlon records. Their event scores also catapulted them to first (2264pts) and second (2252pts) through two events respectively.

100m Hurdles - Friday, August 12 @ 5:35am PDT

What SBTC's Tom FitzSimons, Jr., reporting from Rio called a "Santa Barbara light rain", welcomed the Heptathletes on Day 1 of the Heptathlon at Olympic Stadium. A nerves rattling start also welcomed those in Heat 2 of the 100m Hurdles. After a false start was charged to the field when Germany's Jennifer Oeser false started in lane 2, Nwaba would get a first warning after also false starting on the second attempt. With the Heptathletes finally off she would run a clean race until she clipped the 10th and final hurdle, but was able to maintain her composure to cross the line in 13.81 (1005).

Nwaba would be in 22nd place after event number one, which is just slightly below the expected result. In the light Rio rain only four Heptathletes would record personal or season's bests. Theisen-Eaton, who trains in Santa Barbara part-time during the year would run well in heat 4 with a 13.18 (1097) and was in sixth place overall. Williams, in her strongest event, led the U.S. in the 100m Hurdles with a 13.04 (1118) and was in fourth entering the High Jump.

At the Olympic Trials in Eugene earlier in the summer she ran a season's best 13.65 (1028pts). Look out for Latvian Heptathlete Laura Ikauniece-Admidina to push Nwaba in lane 8 who has a blistering 13.07 season and personal best. Ikauniece-Admidina has the fourth best Heptathlon score in 2016 with 6622pts.

High Jump - Friday, August 12 @ 6:50am PDT

As one of the best High Jumpers in the field, Nwaba will be in Group A at 6:50am PDT with the fourth best jump in 2016. In Eugene at the 2016 USA Olympic Team Trials, Nwaba set a personal best, Hayward Field stadium record and tied the Trials records with her leap of 1.90m / 6'2.75 (1106pts). Katarina Johnson-Thompson (GBR) will be an important athlete to watch with the second best mark in the field and the ability to score 60-70 plus points over Nwaba in the High Jump. At the 2016 Götzis Hypo Meeting in May Nwaba and Johnson-Thompson were locked in a close battle with Nwaba finishing ahead on the overall scoreboard by 56pts.

Shot Put - Friday, August 12 @ 4:35pm PDT

In the third event and kicking off the evening section in Rio, Nwaba will be in Group A at 4:35pm PDT. At the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships, she set a big personal best with her toss of 15.00m / 49'2.5 (861pts). Outdoors she has a best of 14.64m / 48'0.5 (837pts), which she set in 2015, while her outdoor season's best is 14.47m / 47'5.75 (825pts) from the Thorpe Cup prior to departing to Rio.

200m Dash - Friday, August 12 @ 6:05pm PDT

To wrap up Day 1, Nwaba will toe the line in Heat 3 of 4 in lane 3 at 6:15pm PDT. Recently, Nwaba has excelled at the longer 800m run, but her 200m is also an event where she can score over 1000pts. In 2015 she ran 23.76 (1004pts) and has a season's best of 24.04 (977pts), which she ran in a light headwind at the Götzis Hypo Meeting in late May.

Nwaba's Day 1 personal best is 3909pts and will likely need to be near or exceed that count to be in position for a top 5 finish. The reigning Olympic Champion Jessica Ennis-Hill (GBR) and Theisen-Eaton are the pre-event gold medal favorites. Ennis-Hill is the fifth best Heptathlete all-time with a personal best 6955pts, while Theisen-Eaton comes in as the reigning World Indoor Pentathlon champion and leads the field with a 2016 best of 6765pts.

Long Jump - Saturday, August 13 @ 7:45am PDT

Leveraging her speed and leaping abilities, Nwaba has a best from 2015 reaching 6.23 / 20'5.25 (921pts). She will be competing in Group B as the 14th jumper. At the Thorpe Cup, just a few days prior to departing for Rio she jumped out to a season's best 6.06m / 19'10.75 (868pts).

Javelin - Saturday, August 13 @ 4:00pm PDT (group A) / 5:18pm PDT (group B)

Finding new distance in 2016, Nwaba set a personal best toss of 50.40 / 165'04.25 (868pts) at the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational. She has continued to hover around the 50m line at multiple competitions in 2016.

800m Run - Saturday, August 13 @ 6:50pm PDT

One of her strongest events in relation to the rest of the competition, Nwaba is one of the best in the world at 800m amongst Heptathletes. Her personal best 2:07.13 (1007pts) from the 2015 USA National Championships helped her win her first USA title. Her best thus far in 2016 is a 2:10.08 (963pts) at Götzis that catapulted her to a fifth place overall Heptathlon finish amongst many of the same women she will see in Rio.

Fayetteville, Ark. – ABEO / Santa Barbara Track Club's (SBTC) Lindsay Lettow and Lindsay Schwartz came into the 11th Thorpe Cup Heptathlon competition between USA and Germany as the final qualifiers for the seven woman Team USA roster. Taking full advantage of the opportunity Lettow and Schwartz would earn silver and bronze medals with 6,098pts and 5,962pts respectively during the two-day, seven-event competition held at the University of Arkansas on July 29 and 30. Collectively Team USA would also break the Thorpe Cup record, amassing 18,320pts, which would best its 2013 score of 18,117pts.

While Lettow would earn her first international medal for Team USA, she was no stranger to the competition entering her fourth Thorpe Cup. She would set the tone in the first event with a personal best 13.47 in the 100m Hurdles (1055pt), her first time under 13.50. In her third event Lettow would score her second best with a Shot Put traveling 12.74 / 41'09.75 (745pts). After a strong 24.57 in the 200m she would net a personal best Day 1 score of 3583pts. Schwartz competing well across the board in all four events on Day 1 would settle in right behind her teammate in third place with 3571pts.

On Day 2, Lettow and Schwartz would not let up on the competition maintaining their positions after each event. To cap off the Thorpe Cup, Schwartz would lead a SBTC 1-2 finish in the final event, the 800m, as they crossed the tape in 2:14.18 and 2:14.43 respectively. This would mark the first time two SBTC athletes medaled in international competition at the same event.

Next up for the SBTC will be a trip to the Rio Olympic Games, where Barbara Nwaba will begin her Heptathlon competition on Friday, August 12 as the reigning national champion for Team USA.

Santa Barbara, Calif. – While the Olympic Games in Rio grab the public's attention, athletes representing Team USA stretch around the world during the summer to represent the United States in select international competitions. After strong competitions during the USA Olympic Track & Field Team Trials earlier this month, the Westmont College based ABEO Santa Barbara Track Club (SBTC) athletes Lindsay Schwartz and Lindsay Lettow were selected to join Team USA and compete in the Thorpe Cup, a unique Combined Events meet between Germany and the U.S. that dates back to 1993 and is named after famous U.S. Olympian Jim Thorpe. The Thorpe Cup will be held in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Friday, July 29 and Saturday, July 30.

The Road to Arkansas

Schwartz, a University of South Alabama alumni and native of Watertown, WI, finished 9th in a deep Heptathlon national championship competition. Her 6036pts was a personal best as she became the third SBTC athlete to crack the 6000pt barrier in the two-day, seven-event Heptathlon. This marks her third year competing for Team USA at the Thorpe Cup and enters the competition as the reigning bronze medalist; she also earned a bronze medal in 2013.

While Lettow, a Central Missouri alumni and native of Urbandale, IL, fell just shy of her personal best and 6000pts at the USA Olympic Track & Field Trials, her 5960pts put her in 10th place, right behind teammate Schwartz, grabbing a Team USA roster spot for the sixth consecutive year. Lettow, a veteran on the squad will look to earn her first medal in Fayetteville.

Also listed as an alternate for the Thorpe Cup is SBTC's Tom FitzSimons, Jr. to represent Team USA in the Decathlon.
