Priester taking new Santa Barbara Track Club to elite territory

By John Dvorak, PresidioSports.com Priester-SB-Track-ClubA Gold Medal at the Thorpe Cup, two athletes on the podium at the USA Track & Field Championships, hosting the world-record holder in the decathlon… it’s been that kind of year for the newly formed Santa Barbara Track Club.

At the reigns is Josh Priester, a multi-events coach with the vision of establishing Santa Barbara as an elite training destination for some of the world’s best track & field athletes.

“We are providing a home for young women and men to pursue their lifelong dream of competing for Team USA as well as other countries,” Priester said. “Perhaps some of our athletes will even realize their ambition of competing in the Olympic Games.”

One of those athletes is Barbara Nwaba, a former UCSB athlete who placed second at the USA Track & Field Championships in the heptathlon in June. Nwaba, a prospect for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, continued a strong summer with a record-setting victory in Germany last week at the Thorpe Cup.

Schwartz takes Pan American Silver Medal in Ottawa, Canada

Marks the highest international achievement to date for the Santa Barbara Track Club. OTTOWA, Canada -  Lindsay Schwartz of the Santa Barbara Track Club (SBTC) once again rallied her way to the podium in an international heptathlon competition while representing the United States of America. Schwartz, a native of Watertown, Wisconsin, surpassed her 2013 Bronze Medal performance to earn the Silver Medal at the 2014 Pan American Combined Events Cup over the weekend. The competition featured 28 of the highest ranked athletes from 10 Countries within North and South America.

The silver medal earned by Schwartz marks the highest international achievement to date for the Santa Barbara Track Club.  Schwartz ' s score of 5835 was higher than her USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships performance three weeks earlier in Sacramento. She showed consistency throughout the competition en route to her silver medal performance. She utilized a strong first day with a second day that saw her throw a season best of 40.02 meters in the javelin. She closed the meet with a 2:14 in the 800 to move up on the podium.

"Lindsay has continued to demonstrate her ability to compete and persevere this season.  An early season injury forced her to miss a lot of training. It is great to see her finish her season this way" commented SBTC Head Coach Josh Priester.

Schwartz has been one of the most consistent performing heptathletes in the USA throughout 2013 and 2014. Her competition resume includes 3 International Medals and 4 top 10 USA finishes in Outdoor and Indoor Track and Field. Schwartz and the SBTC train at Westmont College and Prevail Conditioning in Santa Barbara.

The SBTC has one international event remaining in 2014 with Barbara Nwaba and Tom FitzSimons representing Team USA at the Thorpe Cup in Marburg, Germany on July 26-27. Nwaba, a UC-Santa Barbara alumni (2012) and Los Angeles, CA native, enters the Thorpe Cup as the second ranked Heptathlete for the U.S. off the heals of a personal best 6,307 points and a Silver Medal finish at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, CA.

Nwaba Completes Record Day at USA Track & Field Championships

National runner-up sets personal record to become the 14th all-time U.S. Heptathlete with 6,307 points. Event Website

SACRAMENTO, Calif - On the heels of a record day 1 for Santa Barbara Track Club's (SBTC) Barbara Nwaba, she set two personal bests on day 2, racking up 6,307 points, a personal record Nwaba, 25, finished in second place behind former Cal Poly SLO star and 2012 Olympian Sharon Day (6,470 points), while vaulting herself to the 14th best mark all-time in the United States.

Nwaba Climbs the U.S. All-Time Heptathlon List

Nwaba came to play on a hot, dry afternoon at Sacramento State University's Hornet Stadium. She led off with a personal record in the Long Jump (19 ft 9in) and followed it up with another personal record in the Javelin (143ft 6in).

In the final event of the day at 2:30pm, in the now blazing sun, Nwaba needed to run close to her personal best at 800m to crack the Top 15 all-time U.S. heptathlete list. She ran a strong race finishing in 2:13.76, claiming the 14th all-time mark.

"To have only cracked 6,000 points for the first time earlier this year and now find myself amongst the all-time greats in the U.S. is a really exciting," stated Nwaba, a 2012 UC-Santa Barbara alum. "It was hard missing an opportunity last year to qualify for the World Championships being out for injury. This was the breakthrough I have been working toward and it's a real blessing."

"Barbara is one of the most disciplined athletes I have ever had the pleasure of coaching and to come out and perform as well as she did in a championship event is thrilling," commented SBTC Head Coach Josh Priester.

Fellow SBTC athlete Lindsay Schwartz completed the Heptathlon in ninth place with 5,816 points. For Schwartz this was a strong showing considering that she missed eight weeks due to an achilles injury in early April at the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational, an event she won.

Ryan Martin in 800m Final

Ryan Martin, who finished 5th in yesterday's 800m semi-final, successfully petitioned USA Track & Field to be granted a spot in tomorrow's final. Nick Hartle, a UCLA sophomore, was disqualified for un-sportsman like conduct at the finish line.

Considering this is our first year as a formal track club, I couldn’t be more excited about the team. We have a tremendous group of elite athletes, our youth track program started this spring, and we have a great group of people in Santa Barbara who care about our mission within the community.  We competed well against a lot of great clubs today, including clubs that have been around for decades”.

Barbara Nwaba Wins Prestigious Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon

Santa Barbara Track Club athlete and UC-Santa Barbara alum scores a major early season win off an up and down two days of competition; breaks 6000 point barrier for first time; ranked 1st in U.S. and 2nd in world for 2014 Complete Results

IMG_5658Azusa, Calif. - Santa Barbara Track Club's (SBTC) Barbara Nwaba (USA) won the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon competition with a score of 6043 points, breaking the 6000 point barrier for the first time in her career. Nwaba edged out Angela Whyte's (CAN) 6018 point performance. Whyte, a two-time Olympian in the 100m Hurdles, is in her first season of competition in the combined events. For Nwaba, the mark currently ranks her number one in the U.S. and second in the world for 2014.

The win and personal best was filled with some high moments and also some low ones over the two day Heptathlon competition at Azusa Pacific University. Her 100m Hurdle race, which kicked off the competition, was one of her slowest in the last seven years and a full second off her best, crossing the line in 14.65 seconds. However, she capped off the day with a blazing 23.91 second 200m Dash; a personal best. After day one Nwaba found herself in second place, only four points behind Whyte.

On Day 2, in a reverse of fortunes not only from Day 1, but also from the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational where she fouled out of the competition, Nwaba began the day with a 19 foot leap in the Long Jump; another personal best. Unfortunately, her next event, the Javelin, set her back yet again with a toss of 130'3"; over fifteen feet shy of her personal best.

Entering the 800m Run, the final event of the day, Nwaba was 145 points back of Whyte and would need to run 2:14.4, a mere .09 seconds off her best 800m time to break the 6000 point barrier. Determined, yet composed, Nwaba notched a three second personal best, winning the final event of the competition in 2:11.42, catapulting her to the Mt. SAC Relays title and across the coveted 6000 point milestone.

The mark qualifies Nwaba for the 2014 USA Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, CA from June 26-29.

His efforts included a 15.39 in the 110m Hurdles, a personal best 42.44m (139'03") in the Discus and a 4:47.68 in the howling wind to cap off the day in the 1500m. Smith, a local Dos Pueblos High School standout, is the two-time reigning NCAA Division II national champion for Chico State. Smith currently leads all NCAA Division II competitors and is ranked fifth in the U.S.

Reinis Kregers of Kansas State finished second with 7304 points and John Brunk of Chico State rounded out the top three with 7262 points.
